About
Playworks was created to provide continued development for scripts and projects for stage and film.
Formed in 2002, Playworks is a production company that has developed new scripts, produced, co-produced with other organizations, and toured. Among the company’s past productions are “Husbandry” by Patrick Tovatt, “Heathen Valley” by Romulus Linney, “Finding Donis Anne” by Hal Corley, and the premieres of “Counter Girls” by Michael Russell and “Some Things That Can Go Wrong at 35,000 Feet” by John Orlock. The company has collaborated with organizations such as Spirit Square Arts Center, through which it produced the SummerStage festivals, which included the regional premiere of Michael McKeever’s "Open Season" and a revival of Willy Russell’s "Shirley Valentine" . This production also traveled to theatres including Blowing Rock Stage Company, Florida‘s Riverside Theatre, and Pack Place, and continues to be available for touring.
Playworks has also maintained a commitment to new plays through staged readings and conferences such as the Rockwell Foundation New Projects Festival. A recent addition to Playworks’ partnerships is "Thinking in Pictures" , produced with The Light Factory, through which new film scripts were added to the developmental process. (“Gospel Hill,” an entry in the festival, has since become a feature film with Danny Glover and Angela Bassett.)
Education activities have included classes and work/study programs such as the one with Davidson College for SummerStage, and workshops by visiting artists including Cirque du Soleil’s Karl Baumann.
The company’s mission is to provide opportunities for new scripts and new ideas at various stages of development, and to encourage a healthy life for that work through workshop, production and collaboration.
