Steve Umberger has been involved in the opening and establishment of three arts centers and four theatre companies, including The Playworks Group LLC (Principal) and recently the non-profit Festival Stage (Creative Director). He has produced and developed over 250 stage and film / video projects and related events for many companies including Florida Studio Theatre, Riverside Theatre, People's Light & Theatre, Barter Theatre, Flat Rock Playhouse, and Appalachian Summer Festival. He spent 25 years as Founder and Artistic Director of Charlotte Repertory Theatre, the leading resident professional theatre for adults in its metro region, and one of the 70+ national members of The League of Resident Theatres. Among the Rep's guest artists are Pulitzer Prize winning playwrights Beth Henley and Tony Kushner, and Academy Award winning actor Olympia Dukakis. Credits include theatre and symphony collaborations, director and playwright commissions, and the development and production of many new scripts. His film / video work includes short films based on the plays Husbandry, Boca, and Decorations (also co-author), work in network films and series, and in the Emmy Award nominated documentary Dear Jesse. He has taught, consulted and guest directed for many companies. He studied at Circle in the Square in New York and is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and Actors' Equity Association.  Website   Back to People
